Spainish Train Accident

Have been trying to work out what happened in the train accident in Spain today. Took a while to locate the site of the accident but, after a bit of detective work, I found the site and, I suspect, the cause.

The accident occurred on the southern outskirts of Santiago at the end of a newly opened (Dec 2011) high speed connection that permits 350km/h operation. Oddly, this incredibly fast and nearly dead straight section ends within 100m of a tunnel and enters a 90 degree turn. So, if the driver(s) miss a speed sign, the consequences are always going to be dire.

Location of the accident can be seen here. Satellite images show the old line here but if you look around you can see the ground works for the tunnel under construction. The map view clearly show the new high speed connection.

Information about the new line can also be found here.
